Randal S. Poirier, Financial Planner, Makes Donation to the Robert Potter League for Animals

Randal S. Poirier, Financial Planner, Makes Donation to the Robert Potter League for Animals

Newport, RI (December, 2015) – Randal Poirier, ChFC, Financial Planner and Partner with Independence Financial Partners recently made a planned gift of life insurance to the Potter League for Animals. The donation will support the Potter League’s mission of making a significant difference in the lives of animals.

“I abide by Winston Churchill’s philosophy, ‘we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give,’ Poirier says. “My goal in making this gift is to help the Potter League in its commitment to animals, so that others might benefit from their amazing shelter and adoption services, much like I did.” Poirier adopted his black Labrador Retriever, Hamlet, from the Potter League in 2010.

M. Christie Smith, Potter League Executive Director, praised Randal for recognizing that life insurance can be a wonderful way to help the Potter League in the future.  “Donors and visitors always tell me they want to take all of the animals home with them. While that is not possible, Randal has found a unique and generous way to help all of the animals at the Potter League. We are so grateful. Randal’s gift means he will be a part of many animals’ lives for a very long time. I can’t think of a better way to have an impact and personally feel good about being a donor.”

Investing in Renewable Energy: January 2016

So if a group of 28 billionaires that make up the Breakthrough Energy Coalition is pledging to invest billions of dollars in "patient, flexible risk capital to bring riskier new clean energy technologies to market, 1" it does not necessarily follow that investors concerned about global warming should also invest in this sector.

Yet this Coalition should prompt us to give more thought as to where we are putting our money. Impact investors ask ourselves hard questions. How is my financial support of this company, this mutual fund, or this municipal bond going to help my community, my country, or my planet? Is this investment just a charitable investment or it based on sound financial analysis? As Bill Gates says on the Breakthrough Energy Coalition website, "Our primary goal with the Coalition is as much to accelerate progress on clean energy as it is to make a profit." 2

401(k) – Tibble v. Edison SCOTUS Ruling

Recent Supreme Court Decision Provides New Fiduciary Navigation Points

United States Supreme CourtPlan trustees and fiduciaries must regularly monitor plan costs and fees and take action when appropriate.

The ruling and guidance should seem obvious, but it’s not.  Prudent investment selection must be followed by ongoing monitoring of fund performance, costs and fees - accompanied by removal of any imprudent offerings.

Independence Financial Partners and Boys Town of New England bring holiday cheer

Independence Financial Partners and Boys Town of New England bring holiday cheer

December 15, 2015 – Warwick, RI - This holiday season, Independence Financial Partners worked with Boys Town of New England’s in-home family services program to help make it a special holiday season for two brothers, ages 2 and 8.

After receiving the brothers’ holiday wish lists, Santa’s helpers at IFP worked to cross off everything on their lists, and raised extra money to purchase staple items, like pajamas, that the Boys Town campus needs.

Ashley Kuzmanko, Boys Town of New England Development Director, stopped by the IFP office on December 15th to collect the gifts from Santa and get a photo of the “elves behind the scenes.”
